WHY DID GOD DESTROY THE WORLD WITH THE FLOOD?

People often ask the question: “Why did God destroy the whole world with the Flood?”

When God created the earth, He repeatedly declared — “It is good.” “It is good.” “It is good.” “It is very good.” (Genesis 1:4, 10, 12, 18, 21, 25, 31)

If everything that God created was good, why would He suddenly destroy it?

That’s a good question and there are several answers:

#1 SIN DEMANDS JUDGMENT:

The GOOD that God created became BAD and the righteousness of God demands justice.

God created man in His own image . . . and He gave man a free will. (Genesis 1:26-27)

Man had to have the opportunity to make choices or he would have been a mere mechanical servant of the Lord. It is in man’s free will, properly exercised to trust, love and obey God, that the Lord receives great glory and delight. He didn’t create man to be a robot.

But man in his freedom made the wrong choice and chose to disobey the Lord. (Genesis chapter 3)

Man’s disobedience led to death . . . not only upon mankind but upon the entire creation. The Bible tells us — “For the creation was made subject to vanity (ruin) . . . for we know that the whole creation groans and travails in pain together . . . ” (Romans 8:20, 22)

The animal kingdom lives under the curse and pain of death because of man’s sin. Animals eat animals, fish eat fish, and violence and death are everywhere displayed. This was not part of God’s perfect creation. The Scriptures declare– “That the wages of sin is death . . . ” Romans 6:23

Death and corruption came upon all that God had created . . . the whole creation was defiled by man’s disobedience and the curse of sin and death has been passed on to all of us including the entire animal kingdom. There is nothing funny nor pleasant about death.

The Pre-Flood civilization became so defiled and violent that God brought judgment upon all that He had created except upon one family who chose to trust Him and obey Him. Genesis chapter 6tells us — “And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually . . . The earth was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.  And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.” (Genesis 6:5, 11-12)

But it wasn’t just the sin, corruption and violence upon earth that brought about the universal flood.

#2 HOLINESS and HATRED

God’s absolute HOLINESS and His HATRED for sin is demonstrated in the Great Flood. God cannot tolerate sin, big, small or what we consider “micro”. His Holiness demands justice. If He had just “looked the other way” He would not by holy.

But there is good news: GOD HATES SIN . . . BUT GOD LOVES SINNERS!

Sin destroys . . . it kills . . . it is the absolute opposite of God’s holy nature and it is the mortal enemy of all men.

GOD HATES THAT WHICH DESTROYS US . . . HE HATES SIN AND RIGHTFULLY SO!

The end result of sin always leads to destruction and death — “Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God; for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempts He any man; But every man is tempted when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust has conceived, it brings forth sin; and sin, when it is finished brings forth death.” (James 1:14-15)

The sins of Adam and Eve brought death and destruction upon all mankind. What an incredible tragedy!

During the days of Noah and before the Flood, sin became so great that it “corrupted” mankind. (Genesis chapter 6)  Had the Lord not kept one family from this demonic corruption that had permeated the world, there soon would have been no pure human line through whom the Savior could be born and there would have been NO REDEEMER . . . NO REDEMPTION . . . NO FORGIVENESS . . . NO HOPE for man! Had God not brought the demonic “corruption” to an end, Satan, sin, and death would have been victorious and all mankind would be destined to eternal damnation and separation from God.

Thank God for His holiness and hatred of sin!

#3 LOVE, GRACE and MERCY:

God, in his LOVE, GRACE and MERCY, preserved a undefiled human line through whom He could send His Son to REDEEM fallen man and DESTROY the power of sin, Satan, and death!

Mankind had become “corrupted” . . . man brought CORRUPTION upon himself!

It is interesting that God repeatedly used the word “corrupted” in Genesis 6:11-12 to describe what man had done to himself (corrupted in Hebrew: “shachath” / shaw-khath = decay, spoiled or ruined). Man had brought ruin upon himself through sin and disobedience.

But the corruption or ruin that is spoken of in Genesis chapter 6 was much more than the fact that men had become sinners and were living in disobedience to God — ” . . . all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.” (Genesis 6:12)

GIANTS ON THE EARTH?

The Bible reveals that something very destructive and evil was occurring all over the earth — “The sons of God (apparently fallen angelic or demonic beings) saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all whom they chose . . . there were giants (Hebrew: “nephiyl” / “nephilim” / giants or brute beasts) in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bore children to them, the same became mighty (Hebrew: “gibbowr” / powerful or exceedingly strong) men, who were of old, men of renown” (Hebrew: “shem” / conspicuous or easily identified).

Mesopotamian / Sumerian clay tablet depicting Nephilim Giant Anunnaki:

Of greater reliability than Sumerian tablets are the writings of the Bible such as the Prophet Amos where we find that these half-man half-demonic monsters had apparently grown so much they became as large as trees! (Amos 2:9)  Other passages reveal that “giants” were part of Old Testament history. (Numbers 13:22 / Joshua 15:14)

The New Testament also tells us about these demonic beings that corrupted all flesh upon earth in two different passages:

Jude verses 6-7 — ” And the angels who kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.”

1 Peter 3:19 — “By whom also He (Jesus) went and preached unto the spirits in prison, Who at one time were disobedient, when once the long-suffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was preparing, in which few, that is eight souls, were saved by water . . . “

Whatever was taking place on earth before the flood occurred again. Genesis 6:4 refers to these huge and wicked creatures which existed BEFORE and AFTER the flood — “There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that . . . ”

These half-devil creatures may have surfaced again during the days of perversion and corruption at Sodom and Gomorrah. We know they appeared again in the days when the Nation of Israel was about to enter the Promised Land and were frightened by huge giants they had seen — “And there we saw the giants (“nephilim”), the sons of Anak, who come of the giants (“nephilim”); and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.” (Numbers 13:33) They were also mentioned repeatedly in the Book of Joshua which records Israel taking the land from the Canaanites. Joshua

It is also possible that the giant that was slain by the shepherd boy David was also of the superhuman offspring of the nephilim. (1 Samuel chapter 17)

God has now placed those wicked angels in “everlasting chains” just like we would lock up a dog that is “in heat” or “estrus”. (Jude vss. 6-7)  However, we are also told in Revelation chapter 9 that hideous and wicked creatures will one day again be loosed upon earth during the days of Great Tribulation. None of us want to be here to witness those days!

In cases where the nephilim appeared to be multiplying and making an evil influence (before the flood, and among the enemies who fought against Israel) the God of grace destroyed the wicked and corrupted offspring in order to preserve a pure human line.

Prior to the flood all humanity with the exception of Noah and his family, had apparently been “corrupted” and their half-breed descendants would have not been suitable for the birth of the Savior Who came to redeem mankind. God is just and righteous in all that He does. He is truly the God of infinite love, grace, mercy, and wisdom.

It was during this time that one of the greatest themes of the entire Bible was revealed: “But Noah found GRACE in the eyes of the Lord.” (Genesis 6:8) Noah was not perfect but he believed in God and chose to live in obedience . . . all by faith . . . and all by grace!

The Lord’s destruction of the generation that lived in the days of Noah was a righteous act of judgment, mercy and grace. Had He not preserved a pure human line through whom the Savior would come into the world, every one of us today would be eternally lost and separated from God.
